RE: suggestions for a Grand Canyon Trip

I would second staying at Grand Canyon. Campground has full hook ups. We say deer and elk each night around 6PM. Take the buses to tour around park. If your budget allows take the plane ride over the canyon. If you get to 4 corners head on to Mesa Verde and Durango area. We visited the Great Sand Dunes National Park a few years back. It's near Monte Vista. Kids would love playing around there for a few hours. You can pick up I-25 back south to Albuquerque.
If you've only got a week this is too much. If you can take 2 you'd have plenty for this and more.

RE: Let the big three fail !!!

Bankruptcy is their way out as others explained. As for millions loosing their jobs I don't think that's really the case. The country needs cars and trucks.........more than Honda, Toyota and others can supply (at least in the near future). The big 3 still have vehicles that the public desires.
What Uncle Sam can do is temporarily relax mpg standards, EPA, OSHA, DNR, CARB, USDOT, and other costly regs until they get back on track.

RE: Planning a trip to Mt. Rushmore and Yellowstone

I don't think you need reservations for the days in between, unless they are weekends. Weekends seem to fill up.
We take a two week trip each summer. Last year we reserved 3 nights at Grand Canyon. Otherwise we planned as we travelled. Would sometimes call ahead day prior or same day for reservations.
We have a generator so we can boondock if necessary.

RE: towing 12000 lb bumper pull toy hauler

I'd suggest a Hensley or Pullrite hitch. Hensley used to only go up to 10,000. Not sure if they've increased capacity. Had a Hensley. Great hitch.

RE: Should I trade my 08 Silverado 1/2 ton for a Duramax?

We towed a 30' Nomad TT for 7 years with a 96 GMC 1/2 ton (5.7 / 3.73's). Similar weights to what you have. There's no doubt that our diesel has lots more power. Nice to use cruise control on the open road.
HOWEVER, we towed many miles with our old truck. Yes it worked harder, slowed more on the hills, hated strong headwinds, hardly ever used cruise control, rarely used overdrive, etc. But we got along OK and for the most part running normal speeds.
Don't be afraid to work your truck. Watch the temps and excessive shifting.

RE: ERS which one?

Unfortunately we had to be towed in this summer while on vacation. We have AAA and had great service. Since we didn't have RV Plus we had to pay for the 5er portion of the tow. We have since added this coverage. The tow operator indicated he worked with most all the various services. Some were better at paying him than others he said.
AAA works for me since I can usually save at campgrounds and hotels (business travel) and pay for membership.

RE: Ameri-Camp Out of Business

It appears this is true. Word spread through emails in the Ameri-Camp owners group yesterday. We intend to keep the owners group alive. This might be a good tech. source.
Hopefully strong dealerships might help protect new owners with warranty participation.

RE: No Room at the Inn

Some states, such as KY, do allow overnight parking. They refer to them as "safe Havens". For those who haven't done some trucking, try to find a spot near a major eastern metro area after about 8PM. RV'ers can hit Wal-Mart, Home Depot, etc. But many specifically ban trucks.

RE: Winter Travel in Snow, how bad is it?

If you require 4wd to move down the road then you should park. You'll have enough weight on the rear axle for adequate traction in 2wd.

RE: GM asking us to void warranty on chipped trucks.

Do what you wish to your trucks. It's a personal choice.
As for my real world experience, in July 08 our engine quit while in Utah. Sounded like metal inside a cylinder. AAA towed us in and next day we arrived at Moab Chevrolet. They quickly diagnosed the problem as the injector connector on #7 (apparently a common problem for this year). I paid $100 deductible and off I went.
However, I spent the night before wondering if the injector had come apart. New injector? Trashed cylinder/piston? I worried about being stranded for a few days of valuable vacation time, not who was going to pay the bill. Stock truck.
BTW, I told service mgr. truck was stock. He said they tend not to worry about chips/programmers.

RE: Tire Size on '08 2500HD

After the stock 245/16's tires wore out at 30,000 we replaced them with 265's. Looked lots better without new wheels, lift kit, etc. Cost difference minimal over 245's.

RE: Generator

We have the Yamaha 3000 iSE (no boost) and it runs 15,000 btu a/c fine along with TV, lights, etc. Remember, you'll probably need to turn off a/c if you have another high draw appliance such as an electric skillet, hair dryer, electric hot water heater, etc.
I think your Honda will be comparible to the Yamaha without the boost.
BTW, we've run a/c overnight (10+ hours) without running out of fuel (3.4 gal.).

RE: What do I need to plead for different tires?

I "had" Kenda Klevers on our Ameri-Camp. I phoned Kenda with my DOT numbers once I heard about the trouble. They assured me my tires were fine. I watched them like a hawk. Always ran 80 lbs. of air. Our unit is stored inside. In July we blew a passenger side rear tire. Damages were $1500. I'm in contact with Kenda now about covering replacement costs.
I thought my tires were good. I know how things get blown out of proportion on the forum. I had faith in what they told me. Well now I have four new tires at a cost of $550 and a $500 deductible.
One thing I noticed about 100 miles before the tire let go was it appeared to look over inflated. Upon checking it it was fine, just like the others. I think this was the beginning of tread seperation. Maybe someone who's a tire expert can offer advice.
The Kenda's had about 8,000 miles on them. If you're in Frisco, CO and someone offers you 3 good looking Kenda's I'd run the other way!

RE: Fuel Supplies in the South

I was as far south at Indianola, MS last week which is a couple hours south of Memphis. No shortages.
I heard of spotty fuel shortages around Nashville, TN and sure enough I stayed at a hotel in Lebanon, TN and both stations at this exit were out of gas (not diesel). However, next morning both were up and running.

RE: How often should you re-pack wheel bearings?

My simple answer: Every other year.
We're weekend campers throughout the season and take a two week trip annually.

RE: Planning Trip To Grand Canyon

We stayed at Trailer Village this past July. Right on the bus route and within walking distance of many things. We spent two nights. If your budget allows take a flight over the canyon.
We saw deer both evenings about dusk and elk one night right from our lawn chairs.

Silverton to Ouray is the toughest part. I don't see any problems with your rig. I agree with "coptalker" on the steep grades, dropoffs, etc. Beautiful drive.

RE: Towing mirrors for GMC 2500HD

On my 96 GMC I had a set of McKesh and loved them (except the looks). My 2004 has the factory tow mirrors from PowerVision I think.
I'd take my McKesh's back in a minute.
